The #1 Killer Amongst Dancers, Artists, and Entrepreneurs, And How To Overcome It
| |What is the #1 killer amongst dancers, artists, and entrepreneurs? You guessed it…
FEAR.
Fear stands for:
False Expectations Appearing Real.
“If you stay on the sidelines of life, you won’t lose…but you sure as heck won’t win, either.” ~ Mandy Hale
The reality is, the story or imagery that you create in your mind that makes you feel afraid, is always way worse than the reality of actually taking a chance and doing what you’re afraid of. I always ask myself, “what’s the worst that can happen?” I envision it, I imagine it, and then I realize that, even the worst-case scenario isn’t irreversible or impossible to overcome. So, what do you have to lose?
“The best things in life are worth going out on a limb for.” ~ Mandy Hale
Worst-case scenario, you try something new, and it doesn’t pan out. Big deal! At least you tried. Now you know. More than likely, as a result of trying, you’ll learn something new along the way that leads to something else that will be successful. So, either way, it’s worth the risk. If you’re concerned about what other people will say or think, I have good news for you.
Nobody really cares.
“If you’re not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re not doing anything very innovative.” ~ Woody Allen
While you’re worrying about what people are saying or thinking about you or your business, “people” are busy living their lives, and worrying about their own problems. So don’t let the fear of what people may say or think ever stop you from doing something you believe in, or trying something new.
“Freedom is a precious thing. Every day, you have the opportunity to make meaningful & valuable use of it.” ~ Mandy Hale
On the flip side of this, everyone cares about someone or something who’s always doing something fun, helpful, innovative, or informative. They care because it has a positive affect on their lives, so they’re open to it, and open to sharing it with others, and that’s where the true impact begins.
“Excuses are the sure and reliable building blocks of failure. Actions are sure and reliable building blocks of success.” ~ Ralph Marston
The only surefire way to overcome fear of anything, is to take action. The great thing about taking action is that, it builds momentum, and each action thereafter becomes easier. I can testify of this from experience. I’ve created a habit of doing things that I’m afraid of, or that make me uncomfortable, and it has become a lot easier to do. As a matter of fact, I’ve gotten used to feeling fear, recognizing what I’m feeling, and acting in spite of it.
“If you wish to be an exceptional leader, be willing to take on the most difficult challenges.” ~ Ralph Marston
I am not special. I am just like you. If I can act in spite of fear, so can you. Start small. Write down a list of three things that scare or you, or three things that you want to do, but you’re afraid of what might happen if you do. Then take one small step today, and everyday, towards making it happen, and facing that fear. You will be surprised at how empowered you feel, and how this process builds your confidence.
Now is your time. Your time is now. Start today.
